Sixth Grade Math

Course Syllabus

Fall 2012

Instructor:  Missy McCoskey

A.    DESCRIPTION

This course involves the study of mathematics as it applies to education and everyday life.  Emphases are on development of mathematical skill and understanding.  Students will us the skills they have learned in previous years, such as multiplication tables, etc.,  to springboard into new understandings , uses and development of new skills.  Special attention will be given to skills and understanding evaluated on the standardized testing.  

B.     ORGANIZATION

Lessons will be presented by the instructor.  Students will practice, complete homework, quizzes and tests.  Students will track their progress and work to expand their understanding, set goals and work to meet those goals.  Students who struggle will be given the opportunity for tutoring.    Students who fail tests may face mandatory tutoring and extra assignments.  At least four mediums will be used for students to use.  Edmodo will be utilized for some testing.  Bright Education will be used for quizzes.  Plan book will be used to view teacher made plans.  The teacher made website will be used to access general information.  SIS will be utilized for students and parents to view grades.  In the event that a student is absent, they should be responsible to get homework off the internet from the teacher plan book, and complete work at home in order to come to school prepared.  Students will be required to keep a binder with tabs including the following:  progress graphs and goals, homework, notes, vocabulary, old work.

F.     GRADING PLAN

Coursework will be weighted as follows

1.        Homework                25%

2.       Quizzes                        25%

3.       Tests                             50%

HOMEWORK:

Homework will be assigned almost every class period.  Homework will be graded and returned for correction.  After corrections are made, a grade will be assigned.  

QUIZZES:

There will be many quizzes (probably one almost every class period). Quizzes will relate to current and previous topics as well as standardized testing items.  

EXAMS:

Exams will be given for students to demonstrate their knowledge, skill and understanding of mathematical concepts. 

GENERAL:
Your recorded grades will be available for your review online. Do remember to keep all homework, tests and quizzes returned to you so that any discrepancies can be easily and fairly straightened out. Except in cases of actual error, final grades are permanent. 
All papers must have first and last name in upper right hand corner with the date under that.  The title of the assignment and the page number should appear across the top.  All things should be written neatly and in order, and all work must always be shown on everything.
 

G.    CLASSROOM RULES OF CONDUCT

1.        All teacher directives will be followed immediately.

2.       Arrive on time with all your materials and begin to work immediately.

3.       Stay in your seat unless you have permission to do otherwise;  take care of sharpening pencils and throwing things away when appropriate, not during a lesson. 

4.       Raise your hand and wait to be called to obtain permission to answer a question or ask one.

5.       Be kind and respectful to everyone in the class, treating others as you would like to be treated.

6.       Talk only when appropriate.

7.       Keep yourself and your belongings in your own space.

8.       Demonstrate good character and help maintain a positive learning environment. 

H.    EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

a.       Evacuation procedures -- see instructions posted in the classroom.

b.      First aid kit – a limited supply is located in the room.  The nurse will have extra supplies. 

I.       SUGGESTIONS FOR SUCCESS

Success in this course depends on the commitment of the student.  Students must complete homework and corrections.  Students should study for the tests.  Students should also consider whether they have truly learned concepts presented in courses prior to this course.  If students are deficient they should schedule time to meet with the instructor to develop a plan to learn missing skills and concepts.  Students and parents must be willing to work to ensure students study at home.
